restore a car, and you're making money, then you're doing it wrong.” Jay Leno is known for his wit but he makes a
fair point. It starts at the point of
sale, when all rational thought goes out of the window, perhaps because it’s red,
or there’s a V8 under the bonnet, and sometimes simply because “my dad owned
one when I was a kid.”`

You get your beloved prize home to discover it needs a
shedload of wonga spent just to make it driveable. So you spend said wonga, safe in the
knowledge that you’ll never actually recover even 20% of the expenditure before
you shuffle off this mortal coil. But
does it matter? Every time you open the
garage door and twist that ignition key to start that journey, your grin
becomes wider than the Thames Estuary.
Smiles per mile are more important than pounds per mile.

And ultimately this is old car ownership, or it was.

Over the past four or five years there has been a
noticeable increase in car related gatherings.
Cars and Coffee meets are happening on a regular basis, usually monthly,
where the only criteria for membership is car ownership. There are also well known venues such as
Caffeine and Machine, or the Ace Café, where people can meet, enjoy a meal and
perhaps a beer whilst admiring the various cars in the car park.

And this is where I believe the move away from traditional
“Classic Car” meets to just “Car” meets has arisen. Last year I attended the Bicester Scramble,
Leighton Buzzard Cars and Coffee, Caffeine and Machine, Sywell Pistons and
Props, plus the Chiltern Hills Rally and a couple of Silverstone Social
gatherings. At all of these I found a
mixture of traditional classics (MGs, Jaguars, Older Astons, Peugeots etc.)
together with more recent machinery such as Subarus, post 2005 Mustangs, Dodges,
Chevrolets, high performance Audis and BMWs etc.

In earlier times the fun came from modifying a
standard car to reflect the factory and/or racing modifications, hence 1500GT Anglias,
wide arch twin cam Escorts and the like.
Customising was a popular choice.
Cars were lowered at the front and jacked up at the rear to look like
dragsters on the road. The fact that the
engine was possibly standard and so breathless it wouldn’t pull you out of bed,
was immaterial. They were fun.

Often, and rather amusingly, the effect of these restomods on the traditional classic car owner can be likened to the effect of a ham sandwich on a vegan!

Now along has come the “Restomod” whereby you can
either buy the kit to install yourself, or have a dedicated company restore and
modify your car. Examples include MGBs
with Mazda MX5 engines and gearboxes, revised suspension systems, uprated
brakes etc. They still look like an MGB but are far superior in the handling,
and more importantly, reliability areas.
Often, and rather amusingly, the effect of these restomods on the
traditional classic car owner can be likened to the effect of a ham sandwich on
a vegan.

If the important thing is the car, then what is
driving the scene today?

It could be that enthusiasts today are not as lucky as
some and thus own only one car. In which
case it must not only be interesting, it has to be reliable. Gone are the days when an enthusiast had one
or two classic cars in the garage and a good daily for normal trips. Nowadays the “classics” have to perform
sensible duties as well as being suitable for displaying at a car meet. They
need to be interesting, either by way of looks, or by the type of engine
installed. An example of the former is
this VW Golf.

There are many interesting cars; possibly prompted by
the performance Fords of the eighties but you don’t have to look far to find
reasonably priced (in real terms not Gezza’s Top Gear terms) performance
cars. A Jaguar XK8 similar to this one,
seen at at Pistons and Props, will set you back around £6-8k. Not unreasonable for a 370bhp V8 sports
car. And at this age all the original
niggles will have been solved.

And if your
taste is for Americana you could spend a bit more and snag a Mustang GT such as
this one for around £28k, earlier “live axle” versions are somewhat cheaper but "only" 4.6 litre.

Then again, if
performance is the main criteria there are quite a few options available. 0-60 in 5 secs and 150 mph? Why not try a Focus ST? As daily drivers go
the Focus meets all the requirements.
Fast? Tick. Good handling? Tick.
Takes mum shopping? Tick. Easy to service? Well most people have access to the
diagnostic tools, and one of the advantages of the coffee and cars crowd is the
general willingness to assist a fellow driver who may find him or herself in
difficulty.

Perhaps this illustrates the point that the car,
rather than the marque is what is becoming increasingly important to
enthusiasts. And the effect of this may
be that younger enthusiasts are ignoring the clubs; such as the MG Car Club/Owners
Club, Club Triumph and others that in most part cater for what may be called
“proper classics”; and are now just simply turning up at random events where
their car, rather than it’s pedigree, matters.

The fear therefore, is that the traditional car clubs
may wither on the vine. I spoke to a
couple of blokes at the Classic Motor show who were interested in joining the
MG Car Club. They told me that they’d
spoken to a member locally to them who wanted to sign them up there and then,
simply because they were under fifty!

Often the traditional club members deserve their
reputation for stuffiness but equally those traditional club members are
important because they tend to be part of the archive for all things about a
particular marque, or model. But there’s
definitely a case for moving with the times.
In the case of the Jaguar Enthusiasts Club and the Jaguar Driver’s Club,
they cover vehicles from prewar right up to current production, likewise the
two MG clubs have “modern” MGs to discuss and preserve along with a wealth of
important models from the 1920s onwards.
But generally, none of them deal with the restomod issue. Arguably there
is little point in restomodding a Jaguar since they have all the right bits
anyway.

By way of illustration, this wide arch XJ-S just doesn’t look
right to my eyes.

When it comes to values, according to the most recent
Hagerty Market Analysis, the period of the 80s and 90s is providing the biggest
increases. Although generally these cars
are not outstripping inflation they are attracting Millennials, as is borne out
by the RADwood exhibition at Bicester Heritage last year.

This is what they say:

“The criteria encouraged for the cars shared at
RADwood events is simple. They need to have been registered in the ‘80s or
‘90s, and should loosely fit with the ‘greed is good’ theme that permeated
those decades, where drivers aspired to own hot hatchbacks, sports saloons,
sports cars, supercars, luxury cars and 4x4s.

Authenticity and originality count for much, but
period-correct modifications are also welcomed.”

Here again, a quick look around and we note that the
values of 911 Porsches, 635 BMWs and the like are improving quite nicely. But there are some bargains still to be had
in the shape of the Jaguar XJ-S (make sure all the necessary restoration work
has been carried out), and the Golf GTi, but Sierra 4x4 Turbos, Escorts XR3i,
RS1600 and RS Turbo are increasing quite rapidly and probably moving beyond the
useable daily criteria and into the second car/classic area.

Perhaps it's time for the traditional single marque clubs to consider opening their doors to "restomods". A good way would be for those clubs who run "Pride of Ownership" events to open a category for examples of these cars?

So, what's your flavour? A full blown classic, a restomod or a modern?

Food for thought.

(All pictures by Peter Mallett)

UK Parliament website www.parliament.uk and searches for the first passenger
railway you’ll find that this was the Liverpool and Manchester Railway, which
was authorised by Act of Parliament in 1826.[1] The South Eastern Railway Act was passed ten
years later in 1836.

The website goes on
to explain that the advent of rail led to “significant changes in British
society”. A contemporary study compared the road and rail journeys between the
two cities and concluded that road transport could not compete with the
railways. The journey took 4 hours by
road, whereas the rail journey was one and three-quarters hours. The expansion of railways overtook road and
canal travel as being the “go to” transport system for coal/food and other
necessities.

Later on in the
fifties, road transport improved, motorways or trunk roads were built to take
heavier lorries from city-to-city. This
allowed for goods to move quickly and freely from point of production/import,
to the final destination. So, whilst
power stations, steel works and the like, used the railways to transport
coal/ore and other dense raw materials, the roads took on the job of
transporting goods to the heart of the cities and towns around the country.

Also in the fifties
air transport became more accessible to the general public. The development of larger, jet powered
aircraft permitted goods and passengers to be transported swiftly from country
to country; and, continent to continent.

As time moved on
these transport systems evolved; the railways became less passenger friendly as
the cost rose, but road transport, in particular cars, became the transport of
choice for people who had freedom to determine their way of life. And this is where it comes to a screeching
halt because we don’t have those freedoms anymore, we are told that we can’t
choose our mode of transportation, but
must bow to those who think they “know better” and thus restrict our movements
and drive (if we can afford to) an electric vehicle (EV).

So, let’s look at
EVs:

First thing to do is
decide if you want to be able to travel longer distances or you will simply be
commuting to town or the railway station on a daily basis, with the odd short
trip at weekends. If the former you
need, as a minimum, a range of two-hundred and fifty miles. And you must bear in mind that this range is
80% of battery capacity because you can’t keep charging to one hundred per cent
for fear of damaging the batteries. So,
to achieve this you will need to spend upwards of £60k. It is noted that the government’s discount
excluded cars over £40k so immediately we were encouraged to select a lesser
range vehicle. Thus, if you are thinking
of the latter requirements then you can opt for a 40k car with an 80% range of
around 150 miles. We will return to
range later.

As one who owned an
EV with a stated range of 300+ miles I can tell you that it only ever achieved
that once. The average range on 100 per
cent was closer to 280 miles and that was when the ambient temperature was 20o. Then we come to winter and that range just
dies. In order to get at least a
sensible distance in winter, the heater is switched off and the heated steering
wheel and seats are employed, both of which also drain the range and have to be
switched off. I have a 1965 MGB classic
car, the heater is pretty inefficient but it at least provides some comfort and
using it doesn’t materially reduce my range.
So, in order to travel we have to go back to pre-1965! Not exactly progress is it?

Whilst I could get
into the moral arguments surrounding the rare earth minerals and their mining,
I’ll leave that for someone else. What I
will say though, is that EVs are not all bad; they are quiet and comfortable, they can be very quick if you
want to upset the odd Porsche and Ferrari driver and our dog loved mine. But due to the batteries EVs are necessarily
over sized and thus not particularly efficient (small load carrying capacity),
hence the smaller EVs generally have no range to speak of. Furthermore unless you can charge them using
wind or solar power, they aren’t green (but arguably, neither is wind and solar
in reality due to the materials needed for turbines etc.). They are just as carbon loaded to manufacture
as an ICE vehicle.

Why did I sell
mine? I loved it for the reasons of
comfort, I could heat it up on the mains charger before leaving home in winter
(very important for battery life).
Having that charger installed at home meant I was never worried about
getting away. But, on the occasions I
tried to use a public charger, they were either blocked by cars whose owners
had parked for what appeared to be the day, or they didn’t work! Fortunately on those occasions I didn’t need
to charge the car to get home. However,
those in apartment blocks, or terraced houses on inner city streets, have no
choice. The upshot is that in my
eighteen months of ownership I never once used a public charger.

In conclusion, I suggest
that far from being an improvement in mobility, as was provided by railways,
roads and air travel, this latest modernisation of our transport system is in
fact a means of reducing mobility and controlling our lives.

This was a marvelous piece of technology because not only did it tell you the time, you could also time sports events and even time the egg you were boiling. The fact that you needed two arms, one to wear the watch; and, one with the hand that pressed the buttons so you could read it, mattered not.

At the same time we had arguably the best period of regulations for Formula One, in fact these regulations, which started mid-sixties, lasted well into the 80's. With 1.5 litre turbos or 3 litre normally aspirated engines. Of course it was Renault in 1977 who developed the first turbos for formula one use.

Anyway what has this to do with anything?

Well going back to the watch, we now have "smart watches" which not only tell the time; help with that boiled egg; and time laps, they also monitor heartbeats, steps, exercise etc. Clever stuff and considering our stressful lives, quite probably good things to wear. And of course all this represents a vast improvement on the original, although it still does the same job.

Not so the current formula one power units. These power units incorporate some heavy components, KERs etc. which, although they provide power in terms of electricity, they take a lot of lugging around. What is the point? If you can produce a normally aspirated 3 litre, or turbocharged 1.5 litre engine that only needs 100 litres of fuel to push a lighter, more nimble Formula one car around at speeds in the region of 200 mph for 200 miles then why carry all that hybrid junk? As to road relevance. We are after all talking about 9 mpg whether it's a hybrid or a "normally aspirated" engine. Already the majors are moving towards plug-in electric rather than hybrid power, so the road relevance argument is somewhat flawed.

Not to mention the vast savings in cost, coupled with the ability for smaller independent engineering companies to build engines thereby increasing the competition. What's not to like?

I believe reality is starting to bite. Formula One TV audiences are diminishing; assisted by the inexplicable need for penalties for engine/gearbox changes; something that a reduced cost, more simple engine regulation would obviate, since nobody will be paying umpteen millions of Euros for an engine deal.

The cars look like leviathans, nothing agile or indeed nimble about them. Whilst nobody is going to unlearn aerodynamics if the overall size and weight of the car were reduced, together with a limit on size of wings there would be more interest in my opinion. Who hasn't heard the spectators expressing their pleasure at seeing the historic formula one cars that perform at a few of the Grands Prix?

We need to go back, to progress the sport.

Mallett Racinghttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15257995001869870741noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6167010034757080202.post-79954636095496729322018-05-31T08:44:00.000+00:002018-05-31T08:44:13.552+00:00Formula 1 Boring - Whatever Next?Following on from Lewis Hamilton and Fernando Alonso's suggestion that the Monaco GP was boring, which it generally is, it occurs to me that the fundamentals of the "sport" have been lost and thus most races are boring. Here's my view.

In the past twenty years we had the Schumacher/Ferrari dominance. Which prompted the grooved tyres etc. A lot of people complain that the dominance made it boring and from the point of view of variety that may be correct. However the nature of the beast has always led to dominance.

<span style="font-family: verdana, geneva, lucida, "lucida grande", arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 13.3333px;">Right at the beginning before the World Championship was founded in 1950 there was Mercedes and everyone else, even Auto Union struggled. Then at the beginning of the Formula One World Championship the first two years were dominated by Alfa Romeo and its drivers, Farina and Fangio. Alfa and Fangio won in 1951; then, in 1952 it was Alberto Ascari with Ferrari, nobody else came close. Likewise the team and driver won in 1953.

All through the fifties there were close battles for the title but we know Fangio won four times. Almost Schumacher dominance. Yet the key to those races was that you could see the drivers working the wheel. It was exciting.

Take the sixties and the success of Lotus who, with Jim Clark took two championships and with G Hill one. Here there were two drivers who won four WDCs during the decade (Graham Hill for BRM). Also Lotus won with Rindt (Posthumously). Yet Jim Clark is revered by many enthusiasts. As is Schumacher. Nobody complained at the team’s or the drivers’ dominance. Again the cars were alive and you could see the drivers fighting with them.

Then in the seventies, once again Lotus and Ferrari shared most of the spoils. The cars, by now sported big wings and big fat slicks. And they danced. Ronnie Petersen sideways is an abiding memory in anything he drove. He wasn’t a champion (sadly) but he was always worth watching. But he wasn’t the only driver to make the cars slide and dance; Emmo, Hunt, Lauda et al, were all worth watching. Later in the 70's we got the likes of Jones and Andretti (returning) who took the fight to the leaders, and in Andretti’s case, won the WDC.

In the 1980's we got those fantastic turbos and awesome power with ground effect. Those cars ran on rails but they were soon legislated against, so we got active suspension. Although McLaren dominated the decade with five out of ten WDCs there was no complaining. Williams won a couple too. Awesome cars and if they looked a little bit more stable than previously, we could see how difficult they were to drive. The chassis used to shake and vibrate due to the power.

Looking at the 90’s from my perspective. The restriction to V10s was wrong. But we got some great cars such as the FW14B. We also had some great championships 1994 and 1996 stand out for two different but obvious reasons, although the loss of Senna blighted the former. We had the 1993 European GP where the drive of the century occurred. The cars were still a handful to drive but they started to look similar. Perfect? No. But the racing among all the teams was plain to see and in many cases close. Even if by then passing in a pit stop was becoming the norm.

The Schumacher dominance began around 2000 but he’d already won two WDC’s by then. However there were plenty of others who won in the 90’s and the competition was pretty close. We forget that there were five seasons in the 2000's when Schumacher didn’t win. We did have two tyre companies at this time which meant the cars were not all set up for the same levels of grip.

Then, in 2009 we got KERs. All of a sudden cars were running odd laps in order to build up the necessary energy for a quick burst. How daft was that? Then to make matters worse in 2011 we got DRS! As if the only thing that should happen in Formula One was passing . Thus they invented a system that penalised the guy who was busting his nuts to lead and win!

At the same time tyres became an issue. They were designed to fall apart and this they did so all of a sudden, despite using KERs or DRS to get in front, the winner was the one with the right set of tyres on at the right time. And the cars? They were running on rails, controlled from the pits with minimal driver input, no gear levers, no left foot braking, steering kickback dampened etc.

So, why is it boring and why do we need false means for overtaking? Because we aren’t watching people drive their nuts off! We are watching a sterilised TV version of what someone who doesn’t know, thinks Formula One should be. In the 50's to 90's we had less on board graphics, so we had to watch what the car did to see how the driver was performing. Now we get almost inside the driver’s helmet which is technically impressive but have you noticed there is very little input into controlling the car? And a fast corner doesn't look that difficult from the roll bar. On top of which the reliability has taken away that element of uncertainty that driver A will actually finish. So to counter that the FIA issues daft penalties.

For the record I didn't find the 2018 Monaco GP boring but that was mainly due to the knowledge we all had that Daniel Ricciardo's power unit, or whatever, was hobbled thus could he finish or was he vulnerable to attack? It was an element of uncertainty in an otherwise processional race. There is no doubt that the drivers are capable and Monaco exaggerates their capabilities, so much respect to them. But those cars are so technically advanced there is little excitement in watching them.Mallett Racinghttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15257995001869870741noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6167010034757080202.post-14290588773849382622015-05-27T08:23:00.002+00:002015-05-27T09:36:45.119+00:00What a difference a Differential makes!

It's been some time since I raced at Spa Francorchamps, my favourite circuit. In fact three years have passed since we were last here. So, when the opportunity to enter the Classic Endurance Racing Series - Historic Touring Cars event, I jumped at the chance.

Ken Clarke Motorsport was taking three cars to the circuit; the Richard Postins TWR Group A Rover; The Anthony Robinson Ex Works Group 1 Dolomite Sprint; and, my Group 1 ex works Rover 3500s. We arrived at mid day on Thursday, opened the garage, signed on and after a visit from the organisers, we passed scrutineering.

The programme for the weekend was quite sedate, with a free practice on Friday morning, then qualifying in the afternoon and another free practice in the dark that evening. All of which meant there would be plenty of time to relax. Or so we hoped. Not having raced the car here I was hoping to be at least within shooting distance of the 3 mins per lap mark.

From then on my weekend was compromised, no chance of racing at any kind of speed and unlikely to finish any races. Nonetheless the team worked all day to repair the casing and at least get me out for evening practice which went well if slowly. In the meantime an old axle from a 2 litre Rover was being transported from Hinckley and would arrive early the next morning.

Although the strength of the axle casing may have been compromised I took the decision to run the day race on Saturday using the existing/repaired axle. I was pleased to be leading my class comfortably for seven laps, and indeed running among some Group A and Group 2 machinery, although I was slower than my previous best lap time, so it was disappointing when the pinion let go and once again I headed for retirement.

The broken axle showing the repair.

The team removed the offending axle and built the replacement into the car so that we could run the night race. This was a road axle of some 70,000 mile vintage and not a limited slip item either. It would be a slow drive to the finish. Off the line at the rolling start I passed a few cars but I knew I couldn't really compete. Indeed after three laps the axles started to whine and I was from then on, simply coasting to the finish.

Nonetheless I was comfortably leading the class which was reduced due to attrition, when the safety car was deployed due to a massive oil spill at the entrance to Blanchiment. We had at least one lap to run behind the safety car before the pit lane opened for the necessary stops, although my class rivals arrived just as it opened. That then compromised my chances of the class win because having spent another two laps behind the safety car my class rivals caught me up and passed me with a lap to go.

So, second in class and that was only due to the replacement axle which surprisingly held together for the race.

Massive thanks to Ken Clarke Motorsport and the entire team. As it happens I was the only podium finisher out of the three cars; Richard Postins broke his gearbox when lying fourth and Anthony Robinson suffered similar gearbox maladies when leading the Group 1 (TC2) class.

We shall be back!
Life has been somewhat hectic since I started my new job in November last year. What with trying to staff a multi-billion dollar project from scratch, and manage $2Bn of it on my own, I think I can be forgiven if I missed something.
That something was the need for an international licence in order to compete in the Peter Auto CER Historic Touring Cars race at Spa, which takes place this coming weekend of 22 to 24 May 2015. I had thought I could continue to race on my National A licence if I only entered one event with any particular overseas organizer. Sadly I discovered two weeks ago that I was wrong.
So, upon reaching that conclusion, I immediately called Motor Racing Medics +1293 775254 and sought their assistance because in order to upgrade to an International C I needed not only a new medical but also a stress ECG. So, having arrived back in the UK from Turkey on Sunday 17th, I was being put through my paces at mid-day on Monday 18 May. The results were written up overnight and as I write it is 16:30 on 19 May and I am holding my new International C licence. Very impressive.
I’d also like to take this opportunity to thank the MSA licensing team who worked miracles and produced said licence within 24hrs of receiving the form.
And so, to Spa Francorchamps with the Rover.

I was racing my ex works Rover in the Group 1 class of the Motor Racing Legends Historic Touring Car Challenge, which was combined with the Portuguese series, thus I had 23 other competitors in my class. For the first race I qualified 7th overall behind Richard Postin's Group A Rover, three Group 2 cars and two invited Porsches. One of those Group 2 cars was the Vince Woodman Escort RS1600 driven by Dan Cox. Vince was with us all weekend which was great to see and I have to say that sharing a garage with Vince, Dan and the team was a pleasure.

This was my first visit to this very interesting, not to say daunting circuit. None of the corners have the direction arrows we have at places like Silverstone or Spa, just a 100m and 50m distance board. Then there's the blind brows leading to most of the bends. I was glad I booked the Thursday test sessions because I certainly couldn't have learned the track in 30mins free practice on the Friday. My mates Mike Bell and Iain Rowley (Delta Motorsport), explained the track to me but not knowing it, their descriptions meant little, but their encouragement was a major boost to my weekend so thanks chaps. Of course after a few laps I knew what they were talking about so things became more clear.

It was more like heavy drizzle but it certainly changed the track surface. After two rolling start laps we set off and I got away well, leaving the lead Portuguese Escort RS2000 to chase me. I was pulling away quite well so when I came in for my mandatory 45secs pit stop I was just enjoying the track, which at that time, was drying. I came out from my stop and found the Escort ahead by some margin because they changed drivers in 20secs, then I saw my pit board calling me in, I had no idea why, but my team, including Iain Rowley appeared quite agitated so I came in for a drive through penalty for crossing that blend line. I took the penalty with 8 seconds to spare and completed my last lap in 10th place. So, a loss of a win or at least second in class. My fault entirely. Congratulations to Dan Cox for winning the race and to Richard Postins for 2nd overall followed by the Group 2 Jaguar of Paul Pochiol.

I was determined to put right my error in race 2 on Sunday. It was a gloriously sunny day, and therefore hot. I was behind a Jaguar XJS and three RS2000 Escorts who clearly saw me as a threat because as we accelerated from the rolling start, they formed a wall across the track, while the fastest Escort scampered off! After two laps, however it was just me and the Jaguar, having seen off the other Escorts. We swapped places around twice each lap but he had the edge on sheer straight line grunt. Then a piece of luck because the quickest Escort was stopped at the side of the track, so I was second in class behind that extremely wide Jaguar. It was seriously hot and I was trying too hard so I backed away from the Jaguar for a lap to relax, then I got him coming out of the last bend. Having done so he pulled in for his stop, I stopped on the next lap, having gone a couple of seconds faster. I came out in P2 some 13 seconds behind the now leading, RS2000. I closed that gap down and came through on the following lap 4 seconds in front. I stretched that to 8 seconds and then stroked the car home at a reduced pace to finish 5th overall and first in class. Unfortunately Dan Cox had to stop the Escort, which left Paul and Tom Pochiol to finish First and Third, with an invited Porsche in second. Richard Postins was 4th and I was 5th.

So, a brilliant end to the season; although I've only done four races this year, they've been at two fantastic events, Goodwood and Portimao. The car hasn't missed a beat and will now be ready for next year, thanks to Ken Clarke for the preparation and Tim Clarke for the spannering, Pat for team management and the pit wall timing and lap charts.

I spoke to both Duncan Wiltshire and Louis Quinou about tyres. I can't find slicks of the correct size for my car, and I'm not alone, the same applies to Dolomites and Capris, so I hope they can get some consensus to run on Yokohamas, or Toyos etc. otherwise I'm afraid these grids may remain severely reduced.

The idea is for a gathering of classic and racing cars to be taken around the ring road on the first of July as part of a bigger weekend car show. Information about the event can be found here whilst the Beeb has a bit more info.

The more serious reason behind this event is to support the legislation that is currently being presented to Parliament to allow motorsport on Britain's roads.

The Rover will be there to try out the road course and also to run-in the repaired gearbox seal that provided so much smoke and entertainment at Goodwood. Hopefully the weather will be sunny and it'll all be a bit of fun.Mallett Racinghttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15257995001869870741noreply@blogger.com0Coventry, West Midlands, UK52.406822 -1.519692999999961152.251857 -1.842416499999961 52.561786999999995 -1.1969694999999612tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6167010034757080202.post-57567599191647720592014-04-20T17:32:00.001+00:002014-04-20T17:32:09.760+00:00The Stoke Row and Nuffield Motorsport Day 2014Whilst we in the UK savour the delights of Goodwood, now at both ends of the historic motorsport calendar; and in between, the HSCC Thruxton Revival; the Silverstone Classic; the MG Car Club International Festival; the Oulton Park Gold Cup; not to mention the Cholmondely Pageant of Power; there is another event which is arranged purely for charity, by an enthusiast and his band of supporters.

Now in its fourth year the Stoke Row Motorsport Weekend (in Nuffield this year), assembles a display of historic racing cars, a soap box derby and a classic car tour among other things, to entertain families and motorsport enthusiasts alike. Anyone can join in the fun in a classic car tour or just enjoy the weekend mixing with enthusiasts from all areas of the sport, surrounded by racing cars. A short video of last year shows what you can expect. Then again a visit to the website will bring you up to speed.
"Struggling but we'll be there by 7am tomorrow." said Ken. "Good stuff says I, um, how many gears have we got?" Ken replied "five". That demonstrates the level of knowledge I'd been able to soak up about a car I'd never driven.

As you can see it is somewhat difficult to know where exactly to start with this. In January last year, as reported elsewhere, we procured the Rover. The term "in a sorry state" goes nowhere close to describing its actual condition. What we had was an identifiable piece of British Touring Car Racing history. But, it took a leap of faith to think that we could turn it into a going concern in less than a year, so we looked at getting it ready for May 2014 and the Donington Classic.

For the plan to work, we needed a new roll cage, the bodywork complete and suspension installed by March 2014. Then we received an invitation to the Goodwood 72nd Members' Meeting which was to be held on the weekend of 29 and 30 March 2014! A small but significant acceleration to our plans.

Ken Clarke Motorsport pulled out just about every stop they could find and on Friday 28 March I arrived to help bolt the car together. My input involved trim and a few other parts. Although we should have been scrutineered on the Friday, the car wouldn't set off for Goodwood until 5pm that evening! Furthermore it still hadn't driven under its own power!

As is now well known Tiff Needell was to be our "VIP" driver. It is fair to say that we had hoped Jeff Allam could fulfil that duty but he was to be found at Brands Hatch honouring his BTCC contract commitments. Tiff, as it turned out was brilliant. He came to find us when we arrived at the circuit, found the necessary people to allow us in and to offload the car, then he asked a question. "How many gears has it got?" A question that threw me somewhat, and led to the query I posed at the top of this report.

Although it was a bit of a rush, I signed on; the CoC was very understanding and issued me the notes from the compulsory briefing delivered the previous evening; I think we were stuck on the Coventry ring road at the time; and, I went back to the car where for the first time, I sat in the seat and started it! What a glorious noise. Unsilenced and thus very loud!

I don't recall being as apprehensive, the word seems to me totally inadequate, as I was that Saturday morning. The car had not turned a wheel under its own power since 1982, added to which, I had not driven the circuit since 1992! This was a real walk on the wild side. Would we actually qualify and more to the point, would our VIP driver actually get to drive? At this point it is worth noting that Tiff was as eager as me (possibly more so) to get out and play. Anyway we started the engine and warmed it up. The Tachometer was showing some odd results, it would eventually stop working altogether, so we would be relying on sound. (One thing that is going back).

The car turned a wheel under its own power, for the first time in all those years, as I took it to the assembly area that morning. The plan was for me to do 12 minutes and at least get my three laps plus a bit of circuit experience, then allow Tiff to; a) get us a grid position; and, b) find out the car's shortcomings. He performed both tasks exceptionally well. We qualified in tenth only two seconds away from the pole time and significantly, we were running post historic tyres rather than the stickier and thus quicker, D84 tyres.

I think we found that after qualifying, my times were somewhat slower than Tiff's, only by about twenty seconds! And furthermore Tiff had another important appointment so couldn't watch the race which was a 15 minute sprint for owners. In the race I found at least another 10 seconds so finished 16th, only 6 places behind where Tiff had qualified. Hey ho. The race was interesting for a few points; first, I was just turning into St Mary's early on, when I looked in my mirrors and saw an out of control BMW 530 steaming down my inside. I pulled out of the turn and watched him sail into the boonies, which was lucky because he would have taken my front off! Then I got on my way. I was overtaken by one of the Mazdas but soon got that back.

I found myself in a train of cars, all of similar pace and spent a long time trying to get past the AML Capri. It's fair to say that my driving contained far too much braking and "after you Claude". Both Mazdas had passed me and I passed both Mazdas, on the final lap I was somewhat quicker out of Lavant than the Capri so made my move to pass, under what I thought were waved blues for me. Sadly there was a small bump and I saw the Nick Swift Mini which had been in my blind spot. He was of course lapping me. Because of that I finished 16th instead of 15th. However, apart from wayward BMWs and over inflated egos, I enjoyed the race immensely.

The car? It ran well, although we had low fuel pressure, no fuel pressure gauge and no tachometer. Before the race Jeff Allam's sister introduced herself with her husband (Jim Bracey), who it transpired, was a partner with Dave Price and originally built my car. He took many pictures of the car and I hope he can shed a bit more light on its origins. In fact the method of obtaining shells as he described is particularly interesting if not entirely printable.

Come the main race on Sunday, I asked Tiff to take the start, and what a start he made! From 16th to 6th in two laps and by the stops we were second. This of course wouldn't last but at the end of the race, we finished 9th. For what was an untested car, this was a magnificent result.

Next up for the car and me is testing, but before that we need to replace the gearbox, which not only leaked, hence the vapour trail, but felt like we were stirring polycell. However, significantly the car is clearly capable of being right at the front, because thanks to Tiff, our fastest time was no more than two seconds away from the fastest time of the PMS Rover.

We have already booked our hotel for next year.
The full entry list for all of the races at the event can be found here and what a fantastic entry it is. Of course a large number of cars in the Gerry Marshall Trophy will be replicas but I hope they are faithful to the regulations. Of the original cars on the grid there are two Rovers (one ex works, one Patrick Motorsport), two Dolomites (one ex works and one a privateer raced by Hamish Irvine). Two RX7s of which one is apparently the Spa 24hrs winner from 1981, driven in that race by Tom Walkinshaw and Pierre Dieudonne. I'm also led to believe that Gerry Marshall's Group 1 Vauxhall Firenza has been restored and will be co piloted by his son Gregor.

We're still a bit away from completing the car, in fact the engine goes in next week, but no matter what, none of this could have happened without the sterling efforts of Ken Clarke. I thought it would be good to look at what opportunities there are for Groups 1, 2 and A pre 1986 touring cars.

Motor Racing Legends is yet to announce its calendar for the Historic Touring Car Challenge other than the Donington Historic Festival from 03 to 05 May, but there are four rounds planned altogether. Prior to that there is the Group 1/1B dedicated Gerry Marshal Trophy at Goodwood 29 and 30 March.

But having stuck a toe in the Group 1 to Group A water at Spa Francorchamps last year, Peter Auto has come up with a calendar of three events for what it calls the Heritage Touring Cup, again for Group 1 to Group A pre 1985 cars. These are:
Spa-Classic (16-18 of May) with a special "Spirit of the 24H de Francorchamps" format, then the Grand Prix de l'Age d'Or (Dijon) (6-8 of June) and last, the Dix Mille Tours du Castellet (3-5 of October).

The formats for these last two events are 30' untimed practice session - 40' qualifying - 60' race (1 or 2 drivers), whereas the Spa-Classic Endurance is daytime free practice: 1 x 40' - nighttime free practice: 1 x 30' and daytime Qualifying: 1 x 40' - Races: 2 x 60' (1 or 2 drivers)

Tyre regulations :
Slicks for cars which ran on slicks in period, basically 1972 up to 1984. Threaded tyres for all others (modern pattern are forbidden (Yoko, etc..).
So as long as Motor Racing Legends can fit its schedule around these dates then there are up to seven opportunities to race these cars in the UK and Europe this coming season.Mallett Racinghttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15257995001869870741noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6167010034757080202.post-19755629290591353542013-12-05T05:37:00.000+00:002013-12-05T05:38:23.047+00:00Continuing the "Where are they now?" thread 1980-82 RoversThis picture popped up on the Group A Facebook page. It is Charles Sawyer-Hoare following James Weaver's BMW, apparently driving the ex Yogi Muir Patrick Motorsport Rover. Posted by Scott Brownlee.

If this is the Ex Muir car then it was originally a Group 1 Rover 3500S which was converted to Group A specification. Apparently the car is now in Australia and being restored to its former (I assume Group A) glory.

But working from memory there were two Group 1 Rovers in 1980, five, at some races, in 1981 and five in 1982.

So, where are they now? well, not too sure really however based on the current knowledge, we know the Group 2 DPR Rover is alive and well somewhere in the UK. Likewise the second DPR/TWR works Group 1 Rover (Lovett) is under restoration. The 1981 Patrick Motorsport (PMS) Group 1 cars were Yogi Muir, Rex Greenslade and Rad Dougall. The Yogi car described above, is in Australia as a Group A car, the Dougall car was bought earlier this year at Bonhams and we expect that to be out next season.
It shows the rear of Dennis Leech's Group 1 Rover at one of the 1982 Silverstone rounds of the BSCC.

If my logic is correct the Leech car was the ex PMS Rex Greenslade car. Rex had a coming together with the Woodcote wall on the first or second lap of the last race of 1981. That means, in terms of the current whereabouts, we have certainty of one PMS Group 1 car (Dougall) and one DPR/TWR Group 1 car (Lovett). Then subject to confirmation the ex Muir PMS car is in Australia. The Group 2 DPR Rover was racing with the CTCRC up until a couple of years ago, I don't know where it is right now. And finally where is the Allam DPR/TWR Group 1 car and what happened to Dennis Leech's car?

Notwithstanding the lack of location it seems that things can be narrowed down a little. Would be good to get some feedback to see if anyone can confirm or revise the above.Mallett Racinghttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15257995001869870741noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6167010034757080202.post-43586398565108233322013-10-24T08:28:00.001+00:002013-10-24T08:28:55.939+00:00The continuing continuation debate - A personal View.In these times of recession when everyone is feeling the pinch, it is rather heartwarming to learn of the return of, what can only really be described as, a cottage industry. In this case it's the recently announced return of the Knobbly Lister a car originally designed and produced in Cambridge by Brian Lister, an ex Bristol employee.

The Knobbly Lister is one of those iconic 1950's sports cars that made their name running against works cars such as Jaguars, Ferraris and Maseratis. The cars were powered by the Jaguar D Type straight six engine and sported an all enveloping body with "knobbly" bits over the wheels. As can be seen it allowed the body to be "wrapped" around the engine and wheels thus creating an element of aerodynamic efficiency, not too dissimilar to the "Twin Boom" Ferrari Testarrosa.

But that was 1957, when one of the cars driven by Archie Scott Brown won the Empire Trophy. Sadly at Spa in 1959 Archie was killed driving one of these cars. Now it seems that a company by the name of Warranty Wise, has decided that there is a market for these cars and is setting up to "continue" production. Gosh, they are even using the original bucks and body molds as used on the original cars! All topped off with a major investment in state of the art CAD and CNC equipment, just like in the fifties!

Apologies for my cynicism and in fairness to the new owners, they see a market and at the prices they will be charging, who can blame them? They are also marking the chassis with the nomenclature BHL-C (C is for continuation). The really disturbing thing is that they state that the cars will be given full FIA HTP approval.

I suspect the argument goes that there is no difference between a re manufactured car, to a car that has been restored (as was my MGB). The problem for me is that in 1957 there was no such thing as CAD or CNC equipment, it was all done by hand. Also in the 1950's I suggest there were less procedures in terms of quality control/fabrication and indeed the safety standards for cars were somewhat less than now. In my opinion, restoring an original car is acceptable but it can never be the same as building a totally new car from all new materials, using modern technology. Surely, with all the modern construction techniques it would be surprising if these cars weren't dynamically, significantly superior to the originals.

So, bearing those things in mind isn't it more surprising that the FIA thinks it's acceptable to permit these cars (or others in the same situation) to race in true historic events? Which in turn means that the "historic" part of historic motorsport will be driven out of the sport, leaving the market open to recreation/continuations. Furthermore, do we really want to see grids full of Knobbly Listers? As lovely as the cars are, variety is the key to entertainment and we all know what happens to one make series.

There are plans for Lister Jaguar themed events in 2015 to coincide with the 125th anniversary of the founding of Lister Engineering. Further information can be found at at http://www.listercars.com/. Good luck to anyone buying one, I hope you enjoy it, but please try not to pass it off as an original.
We decided to replace one of the front doors due to the, not unsurprising, extreme degradation of the structure. Dave had rubbed the old door down and as if any further proof were needed, he found the dark blue stripe along the door tops from the Daily Express colour scheme.

However I'm pleased to say that things are now moving rather swiftly. The plan is to have the car ready for testing in February next year. With that schedule in mind, David Axisa at Paulerspury coachworks has finished the bodywork repairs and the car is now off to be dipped and primed, ready for the paint scheme.

I lifted this quote from Simon Hadfield replying to the question. "people forget that in period John Miles in his 26R beat Jack Sears (who had the fastest Cobra in Europe at that time) at Brands Hatch and that included a pit stop (!), and at Villa Real dusted the local hot shot in a Ferrari 250 LM. So the impressive part is not the speed but the reliability And a 26R has a 4 speed gearbox......and as an Elite is as fast as a (legal) Austin A55 sports then surely the Elan should be at the very least 10 seconds a lap faster?"

Being a multiple winner in many and varied historic cars, it would be foolish to ignore Simon's views.
For my part I am somewhat bored with the whole issue of development versus cheating, in historic racing. We know that many people run larger engines in their cars for various events and if the organisers are unwilling to weed them out, then either us competitors need to protest or shut up.

Borrowing a post from another poster (GrantP) who said more generally: "The more one thinks about it the more one surely comes to the conclusion that few non-club racer owned cars out there in Times Historique stayed the same for more than a meeting or two at a time. Maybe only a race or two." In essence he's asking "what is originality"?

The problem will arise where, if we insist that cars must remain as original, then there won't be enough of them to race simply because the original parts will be either too expensive to re manufacture, or the supply ceases to exist. Either way by refusing to permit the use of modern and possibly more durable materials, we are condemning the sport to a slow and ultimately sad death.

So, and realising this isn't just about engines, but, if someone makes the pistons in their car out of "unobtainium", surely that is development? If however, they make them bigger than they should be, then that is cheating.

It seems that next year there will be an "out of period" race for original Group 1 Touring Cars. I don't have any more details but now there is a certain amount of impetus in getting our DPR/TWR, Pete Lovett Rover back together. The car is currently at Paulerspury Coachworks having the bodywork restored by Dave Axisa.

So, all hands to the pumps and we should be on that grid.

It won the class championship in 1981 so rather than Sanyo, I would like to run it in its Daily Express livery.Mallett Racinghttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15257995001869870741noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6167010034757080202.post-64011356685305549302013-08-06T04:57:00.002+00:002013-08-06T04:57:36.696+00:00The 360MRC 6hrs of Donington - An Entrant's ViewThe following has been lifted from a post by Mike Bell, proprietor of Canada Garage, in the 10/10s Historic Forum. I think it demonstrates what this event is all about and whilst as an endurance race it may not float everyone's boat, this is really about the teams and drivers. By the Way "Tango" is the name given to Mike's Porsche 924. The drivers were John Hindhaugh, Andy Meyrick, David Smith and Paul Dunk.

See what Mike had to say:

""Hi, I'm Andy Meyrick, and I've been asked to report to you". That was the greeting I got on arrival at Donington from the young man looking precisely like a professional racing driver! OK, I thought, putting my race licence back in the van, I won't be needing that today....

Having done the first three 360 races at Snetterton, this years 4th at Donington wasn't supposed to happen for me. Clashing with the HSCC Croft Nostalgia meeting, and sandwiched between the 5 day Silverstone Classic and 5 day Nurburgring Oldtimer. Not good timing!

But then the enquiry came from Claire about running a charity entry for the Stroke Association, along with Radio Le Mans involvement. Still keen to go to Croft, Tango was offered as a suitable car. Subsequently, when I realised that a 6hr race at Donington could be achieved in one day as opposed to at least 3 for HSCC up North, and Claire broached the subject again, I volunteered to "run" the entry as well. Tenther David Smith, or MGDavid to be precise, joined John Hindhaugh and Paul Dunk as third driver, but possibility of a fourth was still under discussion. I packed race kit and licence just in case.....

Two qualifying sessions went fine, Andy posting our fastest time near the end after about 3 laps in the car......

Plan was for 45 minute stints with refuelling every other stop. With Paul and John being novices in the eyes of the MSA, and with no experience of racing for 90 minute periods, it seemed best way.

MGDavid took the start, holding a place somewhere around our qualifying position. One or two cars came in with early problems, then the rain came..... One by one cars came with water related problems, fix damage or to change tyres, while David 'felt' his way round steadily and reliably. (Apart from one trip through Coppice gravel- admitted later...) by the time he handed over to Andy, we were well inside the top ten. Showing his pro experience, Andy suggested the driver change be done in the garage to keep everything as dry as possible. So we did just that and it worked. With some competitive laps for a 30 plus year old, 130bhp car on still very wet track, Tango was somehow up to second briefly before Andy came in to hand over to Paul, and for us to put in first fuel. The self modified dump churns used in previous years worked fine and not a drop was spilled. Slowest bit was adjusting belts and seat for different drivers!

Talking of refuelling, if you think the regulations regarding clothing, extinguisher, fire person etc are OTT, you should have been at Donington to witness why they are not! One of the Mazdas came in to refuel and I turned to watch from pitwall. As the dump churn was removed an amount of fuel continued to pour out- onto boot of car and ground behind. As the driver started engine it erupted...... Amazing reactions from the guy on extinguisher had flames out before the pitlane fire truck could start it's engine, but the result could have been very different!

At end of Paul's stint on by now dry track, it was obvious looking at the temperature gauge that Tango was running hot. Then while stopped, the rad spewed an amount of water out of the overflow, so we waited for it to cool down enough to take the cap off and top up. John strapped in and away, it wasn't long before he was back in with a lethargic accelerator pedal. Basically it was just about to break in two, and indeed did when I pulled at it!

So, I set to under the dashboard to remove offending item- not easy as it was never designed to have the alloy 'Les Leston' extension that precluded normal removal! Bit of work with mole grips and eventually it was out, and David appeared with a portable welder from garage 8. Thanks Guys, never found out who you were! After a bit of tweaking (turning all settings to max!) I managed to fuse the two halves together with David holding one bit and mole grips the other, and then dived (literally) back under the dash to refit. Not really built for that sort of work...... Main problem was sweat misting up specs and working half blind! With cable re-connected John was sent out again with a round of applause form the watching audience. Sadly he was in again far too soon with temperature reading high, alternator light on and low voltage. With high pressure injection pump not good.... On opening the bonnet it was apparent the overflow was spewing out an unpleasant emulsified liquid straight at the alternator, which was not happy about it. After a short discussion it was decided not to risk the car or indeed anyone else so Tango was pushed into the garage to cool down, the plan being to get out again for the last two laps and hopefully classify as a finisher. John went back to his commentary, and David, Paul and I waited. Good job David, who was going to do the last two laps, decided to fire the old girl up just beforehand, because the battery would not turn the engine over. Quick borrow of a starter pack sorted that (thanks to you Guys as well!) but we couldn't risk leaving the car running until going out, so David shuffled his Beemer estate into the garage alongside, we connected jump leads onto Tango's battery and charged it......

So Tango took the chequered flag, and qualified as a finisher. Another 360MRC 6hr race was over. Last year Cliff Ryan Esq and I did the race without ever opening the bonnet, so guess it was never going to happen this time. But did it stop our enjoyment of the event? Certainly not! I don't think 6hrs has ever gone so fast, and there was never a dull moment. OK, the journey home was pretty boring, but that's about it.

Big thanks to everyone for entering into the spirit of racing for charity, especially young Andy, and hopefully help raise loads of dosh for The Stroke Association.

Tango will be back!"

The age of the entries ranges from the late 50s to the 90s so there should be something of interest for everyone.
What is more interesting is that John Hidhaugh of Radio Le Mans fame will be driving in the Mike Bell Porsche 924 in aid of the Stroke Association. Radio Le Mans will be broadcasting to the world in general from the event. To donate to the Stroke Association click HERE.
Good luck to everyone.Mallett Racinghttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15257995001869870741noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6167010034757080202.post-50354212885481543862013-07-25T08:16:00.001+00:002013-07-25T08:16:47.648+00:00Silverstone Classic 26 - 28 July 2013The biggest and broadest selection of British historic racing grids takes place at "The Home of British Motorsport" this weekend with a total of 24 races. With a choice of grids from the U2TC (Under 2 litre Touring Cars) via FF1600, Formula Junior and Formula 1, to big banger sports cars in the Masters Historic Sports Cars race, the event looks set to be a cracker.

So, running through the entry list here there are one or two that catch the eye. Looking no further than those Masters Sports Cars, GT40 No 17 includes the long overdue return of Steve Soper. Having retired due to medical reasons, it seems he's made a full recovery, so hopefully this won't be his only event this year or in the future.

The Supertouring Car Trophy has Patrick Watts in his Peugeot 405 which he pedaled to victory at Brands Hatch two weeks ago. He faces competition from Paul Smith with Tim Harvey in the RS500 not to mention the rest of a fantastic grid.

The Transatalntic Trophy for Pre 66 Touring Cars includes a name from the Group A days of the BTCC. Karl Jones, ex RS500 racer, is entered in Ford Mustang No 61.

Another entry of note is the XJR14. I believe this is the first race for one of these cars since 1991. Nic Minassion will pedal it in the Group C races.

Anyway, whatever your favourites, if you attend I hope the weather and the racing are excellent.
I realise it is not likely that it could be completed for our first race in Autumn but I have an eye on the longer term. So here we go - a car with provenance and currently in the custody of someone (Roger Dunbar) who knows and appreciates Elvas and their histories:-

The ELVA Mk.1B is dated 1957; built for the '57 Autosport Championship series, driven initially by Pat Fergusson and campaigned regularly by next owner G. Donald Hill (many entries listed) as shown page 79 of the Elva book. Chassis ID #32; road registration # 796 DRB; have old logbook etc etc. Originally powered by ELVA IOE converted Ford 100E and Elva conversion comes with the car as does the rare Wooler remote for the Ford gearbox. Much work undertaken but just too many Elva projects taking up time. Car completely dismantled; and chassis checked and repainted in correct Elva period colour; then aluminium panels replaced (under tray, footwells etc.) by the craftsman who undertook the work back in 1957! Has the original Ashley Laminates (Falcon) body shell which has been prepared and repainted in a nice racing green. History file and umpteen pictures so absolutely ideal for the 1950's race series. Can provide much more info if needed. This historic car needs to be out racing again and so very reluctantly offered to another good home. Price to be negotiated. Contact roger@elva.com or call on 07976234470."

So, taking a few minutes out, my attention was directed to the Silverstone Classic Auctions lot list, which has some interesting entries looking for some interesting prices. First up is the Mark Wright Group 2 Zakspeed Ecort. This is a very well prepared vehicle with an excellent pedigree. I last witnessed this traveling sideways out of Deer Leap at a very wet Oulton Park last year. Ideal for the Motor Racing Legends JD Classic Challenge and/or the HSCC Super Touring Car Trophy.

Speaking of the latter.

Also under the hammer is this Mondeo Super Touring racer. Built by Andy Rouse in 1996 and raced successfully in 1997, 98 in the Czech Republic. Certainly one for the Supertouring Fans.

For those with a taste for the earlier touring cars from the 60's there is the chance to purchase one of, if not the fastest, A40 Farina in Historic Racing. Prepared by Ken Clarke Motorsport and raced by Richard Postins, this one has been successful at Goodwood, Spa, Silverstone and Brands Hatch among others.
For those who like to compete in FIA App K series, there are a couple of interesting choices. The above Corvette and the more reasonably priced Alfa Guilietta.

The entire lot list can be viewed here.

There are indeed quite a number of competition cars currently up for sale, which may suggest that many people are getting out of the sport, either for financial reasons or they're just fed up with it. On this latter point, I note the FIA is suggesting that we all need to hold an international licence if we wish to compete more than once in another country per season. An additional and probably unnecessary expense for many and of course a possible impact for historic series such as Masters, HSCC, CER or GTCC who visit circuits all over Europe.

Personally, I confess that the last couple of years have been a bit too busy to enjoy my racing and lack of time in my cars has ultimately led to a lack of competitiveness. Even Spa last year, my favourite event of the season, failed to raise a smile. So, I'm hoping that this year's sabbatical will re kindle my enthusiasm.

Failing that I guess I could sell up and buy this:

Finally, although a bit late, I was saddened to hear of the loss of Christian Devereux at Donington in early May. We competed in the Snetterton Six hours in 2011, he in a Mini and me in the Capri. I believe he was only a lap behind me at the end and had we run 30 minutes longer, he would surely have been a lot closer! Nice bloke and a sad loss to our sport.

Donington Park seems to be the place to be for Classic and Historic racing enthusiasts at the beginning of May. If the press releases are accurate this year's event is reminiscent of the early Silverstone (or Coys) festivals of the 80s and 90s. Loads of car clubs on the grass in the middle of the circuit, with plenty of stands and of course a good selection of entries for the races.

Among the airborne attractions will be the Battle of Britain Memorial Flight, whilst on the track Kevin Wheatcroft will demonstrate his "replica of a 1937 Mercedes-Benz W125 Grand Prix car. This exceptional machine
is the result of a long and extraordinary labour of love started by Kevin and
his late father Tom, the founder of Donington Park and the Donington Park Grand
Prix Collection." [press release dated 27 April].

In particular the combination of the Masters 70s Celebration with the nascent Motor Racing Legends Historic Touring Car Challenge will see cars such as this BMW (picture by Peter de Rousset-Hall) taking to the track. Perhaps this event will also see the return to the tracks of the works Group A MG Metro Turbo, driven by its original peddler Patrick Watts. Sadly the Mallett Capri won't be running here due to geography!

But Touring Cars are not all that will be there. The comprehensive programme of practice and racing commences on Friday 3:

Judging by the weather forecast they may have chosen an appropriate name for this one. The details can be found on the VSCC website which sports a swoopy new design. Of note is the George Abecassis Centenary race for 50s sports cars promoted by FISCAR who's equally swoopy website can be found here.

Vintage/pre war cars are also to be seen setting out from <strike>John O'Groats</strike> Hertfordshire on the 2013 version of the Flying Scotsman Rally with an entry comprising 106 rather delectable old competition cars.

But if your taste is more for the 50s through to the 80s then perhaps a trip to the UK's version of the Nurburgring, is more to your liking? The HSCC has a large entry for the Wolds Trophy meeting at Cadwell Park on Saturday and Sunday.
